Module I:
Your Personal History

We explore our individual histories with risky play and how those experiences shape the people we’ve become, not just socially and emotionally, but also physiologically and intellectually. Taking a risk and coming through unscathed taught us, first-hand, about the power of confidence, of challenging ourselves, and the impact on our burgeoning capabilities.

Module II:
Safety is Job #1

We explore what it means to keep children safe, even as most of us no longer have to worry about savage beasts or falling off the edge of the earth. What are genuine hazards? What does “safe enough” mean? And what are the dangers to children of not having enough risk in their lives? How do we draw the lines, especially when we, as adults, are biologically and culturally driven to keep children from killing themselves!

Module III:
What is Risky Play?

You might know it when you see it, but it tends to change depending on the child and the adult in question. How do we distinguish between hazards and healthy risk-taking? In this module we look at the various aspects of risky play most commonly found in preschools and ways in which adults can provide opportunities for children to engage in healthy risk-taking.

Module IV:
Social-Emotional Risk-Taking

In this module we take a look at what the science tells us about healthy risk-taking in the course of play, including an analysis of the various types of risk children must experience in order to develop properly, including the oft neglected social-emotional risk-taking that can fly under our radar if we don’t know what we’re looking for.

Module V:
Analyzing Risks vs. Benefits

We explore specific examples of healthy risk-taking found in typical preschools, playgrounds, and backyards. What does it mean when a child seems driven to do something that looks too dangerous to you? How can you support the child to meet their needs in ways that still embrace risk without being too risky? You will learn to assess, on an ongoing basis, how you can best respond in order to serve the goals of both safety and risk.

Module VI:
Convincing Doubters

Some of biggest challenges when it comes to providing opportunities for young children to explore risk are the “doubters” and “naysayers.” We’ll be talking about regulators, licensors, administrators, and parents who often say “no” to our efforts to say “yes.” We explore ideas and strategies for not just persuading these important constituencies, but making them partners in providing children with the healthy risk-taking they need.

How This Course Works

  • In parallel, Teacher Tom will be encouraging you to post your insights, reflections, and questions in our community area, and he will visit and respond daily.

  • Earn and receive a 6-hour Certificate of Attendance signed by Teacher Tom upon completion of the course (i.e., you’ve watched all of the videos and downloaded/filled out each of the six reflection guides/workbooks.)

  • If you keep up with the cohort and complete the course 100% by August 30th you'll be invited to join Teacher Tom for the 90-minute live graduation webinar on September 3rd at 8:00am Pacific Standard Time. Save the date!

About Teacher Tom

Tom "Teacher Tom" Hobson is an early childhood educator, international speaker, education consultant, teacher of teachers, parent educator, and author.   • Who is this course for?

    While it is specifically designed for early childhood educators, directors, and childcare owners, parents and grandparents of young children will also find it invaluable too.

  • What will the course cover?

    We will cut through the fear to take a clear-sighted and practical approach to risky play for young children, with a special focus on talking to parents and working with regulators, licensors, and insurance companies to make sure the children are “safe-enough” without suffocating them in bubble-wrap. We will examine the various types and kinds of risky play that children need and noodle through how you can provide those opportunities in your setting or home. And most importantly, you will come out of this course with a toolbox of skills, ideas, and approaches to providing appropriate risk for the children in your life. You will learn how to say “yes” in a world that is increasingly saying “no.”

  • What will I learn?

    Like with anything worth doing, you will get out of it what you put into it. This course is designed in the spirit of play-based learning in that I avoid direct instruction, “how to’s,” tick boxes, and lists of learning objectives. Instead, my approach is to assume that you are a motivated, intelligent, committed adult. I share my best thinking, tell stories, and ask probing questions intended to make you think about yourself, the families in your school life, and what you can do given your own unique situation. As a result you will feel both inspired and empowered to take action.

  • When does the course start?

    This cohort kicks off on July 24th, 2024

  • How does it work?

    Starting Wednesday, July 24th, and on every Wednesday for the following six weeks, you’ll receive access to one module of the course along with a workbook. You can watch that week’s module at any time that’s convenient for you, as long as you do so prior to the following week. We will all be working through the material together as a cohort, week-by-week. (If you can’t watch it that week that’s ok too, since you have lifetime access, but you’ll have more fun if you keep up with the cohort.)

  • How much time will I need to spend?

    At the start of each week, you’ll get a half hour to 45 minutes of video. You’ll watch and then spend another 15 minutes or so each week filling out your reflection guide/workbook. In total, you’ll be investing about an hour every week between July 24th and August 28th.

  • Do I have to attend at a particular time?

    No. You can watch the sessions and work through the reflection guides any time that is convenient for you; after that you can share your insights and ideas in our online community area and Teacher Tom will comment and cheer you on.

  • How long will I have access to the content?

    You will have lifetime access and can go back to it as often as you like.

  • Where does the course community connect?

    Our virtual meet-up place is our course site on Thinkific.com, where we will share insights, ask questions, and celebrate successes.
